Referral pathway of patients with impacted maxillary canines setting: Torbay and south devon NHS foundation trust, United Kingdom
Background:
The Royal College of Surgeons of England 2016 guidelines state that patients with impacted canines should be referred to an orthodontist by the age of 12, and referral letters should include locations palpated to locate the missing canine, alongside relevant radiographs. Timely referral of impacted canines gives the treating orthodontist the upper hand in determining the best interceptive or preventive method needed. Risks associated with undiagnosed impacted canines include:
a) root resorption of neighbouring teeth.
b) ankylosis.
c) cyst formation.
Aims:
1. To establish ages at which patients are being referred to the Trust.
2. To detect the shortfall in the referral pathway, if found.
3. To implement change if needed. This will lead to better treatment outcomes and less burden on the NHS; cost-wise.
Methodology:
Data of 60 patients with ectopic maxillary canines treated during (1.1.2022 to 1.1.2024) to be collected retrospectively from their medical notes, including:
1) referral date and patient’s age.
2) date of first orthodontic consultation.
3) wait interval for the joint clinic; with surgeon or restorative consultant to discuss treatment options. 4)wait interval to undergo surgery; exposure+/- bonding of impacted canine.
5) treatment outcome. Accordingly, changes will be introduced; leaflets to general dental practices explaining the importance of early detection of impacted canines and timely referral, or an update of the pathway and shorter wait intervals within our trust.
