Post-operative complications following extractions in the oral surgery department at East Surrey Hospital
Dental extractions can commonly lead to minor complications. In rare cases, patients can develop post-operative infection and change in sensation to the area. While most post-operative complications are self-limiting, they can cause distress to patient. Post-operative complications may also lead to multiple post-operative visits. Therefore, where possible, risk factors should be minimized.
This audit aimed to determine the rate of post-operative complications following extractions at the Oral Surgery Department at East Surrey Hospital. Furthermore, this audit aimed to identify patterns in post-operative complications, common presentations, their management and the number of visits required to resolve the complications.
A post operative complication rate of 4% was identified, which seems to be in line with available literature. We noticed a higher incidence of post-operative complications after treatment under local anesthesia or conscious sedation, as compared to general anesthesia. The most common complaint was pain, followed by swelling. A large proportion of patients presented with food trapping, particularly after extractions of lower third molars. The most commonly recorded post-operative complication was alveolar osteitis.
With this data available it was possible to produce recommendations aimed at minimizing post-operative complications for future extractions at the oral surgery department.
