Quality improvement project- harnessing preventative oral health opportunities in a dental same day emergency clinic
Introduction: The Making Every Contact Count initiative encourages healthcare professionals to adopt a preventative approach to disease. As many oral diseases are preventable, dentists should take every opportunity to reduce patients’ risk of further dental problems. Most patients attending emergency dental clinics are irregular dental attenders, therefore, it is vital preventative care is given to this vulnerable patient group.
Aim: To identify barriers to providing oral hygiene instruction (OHI) and diet advice on the Dental Same Day Emergency Clinic (SDEC) at the University Dental Hospital Wales and improve their provision through quality improvement (QI) initiatives.
Methods: Initial retrospective data collection was carried out for one week of patients seen on the dental SDEC. Examination of clinical notes assessed OHI and diet advice provision.
Results: Initial data showed 0-22% of patients received OHI (median 4.5%) and 0-22% received diet advice (median 0%). Implementation of multiple and incremental QI initiatives saw a rise in uptake of preventative advice with 0-67% of patients receiving OHI (median 24%) and 0-50% receiving diet advice (median 17%).
Conclusions: Emergency dental clinics offer valuable opportunities to provide preventative oral health advice. Even in acute dental settings, it is important to encourage positive behavioural changes through a preventative approach.
