The bidirectional implications of orthodontic treatment and periodontal health
Orthodontic treatment and periodontal health have bidirectional implications on each other throughout the treatment journey. Optimal periodontal health is vital prior to commencing orthodontics and throughout treatment and retention. Delivering safe orthodontic treatment is not possible on an unstable periodontium. Fixed orthodontic components become plaque retentive factors which accumulate biofilm. This can exacerbate a range of gingival and periodontal conditions. On the other hand, periodontal disease can have a deleterious effect on bone levels which should be carefully considered with respect to orthodontically induced root resorption. Orthodontics and periodontal health can affect each other at all stages of treatment. The aim of this presentation is to highlight the importance of periodontal health in orthodontic patients and explore the impact that orthodontic treatment can have on the periodontal status. This talk will also discuss the options available to prevent and manage periodontal complications associated with orthodontic treatment.
