Optimising paediatric inhalation sedation waiting list in Glasgow’s public dental service: A quality improvement project
Background: Inhalation sedation (IHS) is an effective treatment modality for delivering dental treatment in anxious but cooperative children, providing a suitable alternative to general anaesthesia. Within ‘NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’, issues were identified regarding the paediatric IHS waiting list used across the clinics providing this service. Inconsistencies in consent documentation and referral quality resulted in appointment delays, inefficient utilisation of clinical capacity, and patients being inappropriately triaged.
Aim: To improve the quality and clinical effectiveness of the paediatric IHS waiting list, by establishing a centralised waiting list to support appropriate patient selection and case allocation.
Method: A centralised waiting list was developed with a dedicated tab for each clinic. A standard operating procedure was created for clinicians to utilise when adding patients, ensuring all relevant information is included. Appointments are then allocated to suitably trained dentists or dental therapists, increasing patient turnover across the service.
Results: Figures show a reduced prevalence of incomplete referrals, and an increased proportion of patients with complete consent and records. This facilitates a more efficient service, and reduces risk of disease progression while patients await treatment.
Conclusion: A centralised waiting list can improve efficiency within the service, allowing patients to access IHS treatment sooner.
