Knowledge saves lives: The use of nitrous oxide in a pediatric dental patient with congenital hyperflow heart disease - Edwards Syndrome
Nitrous oxide (N2O) has some advantages, such as anxiolysis, mild analgesia, and amnesia. In addition, it has the ability to regulate the patient's pain threshold, resulting in rapid analgesia. Being a titratable and safe drug, the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is safe and indicated for the treatment of heart patients.
Edwards syndrome, known as trisomy 18, is a congenital chromosomal disorder characterized by the presence of an extra chromosome 18. One of the most common characteristics of this disorder is heart disease, among others.
Patients with this syndrome are at greater risk of complications in the case of general anesthesia, as extubation must be spontaneous and slow for the patient, which in many cases requires ICU care until the condition stabilizes. Therefore, we opted for a safe approach with behavioral control of the patient, monitoring of vital signs, and outpatient inhalation sedation for complete surgical treatment, with safety and control of the field.
